As part of its strategy to expand the office and strengthen its practice areas, Tauil & Chequer Advogados in association with Mayer Brown announces the arrival of Alexandre Bittencourt Calmon, who joins the Oil & Gas and Mining groups as a partner in Rio de Janeiro. Recognized internationally for his experience in natural resources, Mr. Calmon joins the firm from Vieira Rezende Advogados, where he was co-head of that firm’s Oil & Gas practice.
Mr. Calmon has extensive experience in regulatory affairs and M&A operations, assisting both local and international clients in the areas of oil & gas and mining. He also advises clients in operations involving oil & gas purchase-and-sale contracts and consortia structuring, as well as in projects in the midstream area, such as transportation and supply of gas and ethanol. For a number of years, Alexandre has been named in the main legal publications as one of the most respected oil & gas lawyers in Brazil, having participated in several major oil and gas exploration and production operations in the country.
"Alexandre's experience reinforces our already consolidated energy area, establishing us as one of the most important players in the market," said Alexandre Chequer, partner at Tauil & Chequer Advogados and co-head of the Global Energy group at Mayer Brown. "We are one of the few offices that have lawyers working full-time in the oil and gas industry. The breadth of our team not only makes us the natural choice for national and international companies in this industry but also allows us to attract great talents like Alexandre."
Before joining Vieira Rezende Advogados, Mr. Calmon was a partner in Veirano Advogados' natural resources practice, and previously, a member of the global natural resources group at Macleod Dixon LLP Canada (currently Norton Rose Fulbright), where he advised on oil & gas and mining matters for international clients doing business in various parts of South America. Mr. Calmon also served as a professor at Santa Úrsula University in Rio de Janeiro, where he lectured on corporate and commercial Law from 2002 to 2006. Mr. Calmon earned his law degree from Universidade Cândido Mendes (UCAM).
