Mayer Brown was declared the winner in two categories at this year’s Asia Legal Awards.
The firm won the award for “Real Estate Firm of the Year” following a hugely successful year for Mayer Brown’s Real Estate Markets practice. The award recognizes the practice’s work, including advising a consortium of firms led by Gaw Capital Partners on a US$2.9 billion tender acquisition of 17 shopping centres from Link REIT in Hong Kong, the US$588 million disposal of Metropolitan Plaza in Guangzhou to Link REIT and the acquisition by Wang On Properties of a distressed joint venture that was developing a residential site in Ma On Shan in Hong Kong and its subsequent sale of 60 percent of the site. The success of these notable transactions is a testament to the firm’s distinct capabilities in real estate markets in Asia and its depth of knowledge in real estate development, real estate finance, real estate M&A and disposals and real estate disputes.
Hong Kong-based partner Susanne Harris was awarded “Government Enforcement/Investigations Lawyer of the Year.” The award acknowledges Ms. Harris’ achievements in financial services regulatory and investigations, which includes advising a global bank on complex cross-border reviews of its financial crime compliance operations. It also recognizes Ms. Harris’ success in spearheading the firm’s Financial Services Regulatory Investigations practice in Asia. Under her helm, Ms. Harris has grown the practice from one lawyer in 2014 to a seasoned team of seven, addressing multi-jurisdictional legal and regulatory issues within a challenging and dynamic environment. Her impressive track record combined with her emergence as a thought leader in this practice makes Ms. Harris a worthy recipient of this award.
