Mayer Brown Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner Michael Kimberly (Washington DC) was named a 2017 “Energy & Environmental Trailblazer” by The National Law Journal (NLJ), which honors those who “continue to make their mark in various aspects of legal work in the areas of energy and environmental law.”

While Mr. Kimberly does not describe himself as an environmental lawyer, he is an accomplished Supreme Court and appellate lawyer whose work has included a number of high-profile and important environmental cases, including several involving the Clean Water Act. In a profile piece, NLJ highlighted Mr. Kimberly’s role as liaison counsel for 57 industry groups that filed a dozen petitions for review in the US Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit, representing all aspects of the US economy. “Our position is that these challenges belong in district court rather than the appellate court,” he told NLJ. The US Supreme Court has granted Mr. Kimberly’s interlocutory petition for a writ of certiorari. “It’s very rare to do this,” Mr. Kimberly said. “It’s an indication from the court that the issue is very important.”
