Mayer Brown won the Debt Market Deal of the Year (Midsize) at the Asian Legal Business SE Asia Law Awards 2016. The prize was awarded for the firm’s work on the US$300 million loan financing of Ooredoo Myanmar Limited’s telecommunications infrastructure in Myanmar. Mayer Brown was the international legal adviser to the Asian Development Bank and International Finance Corporation, which provided the loans.

“We’re delighted to be receiving this award,” said Benjamin Thompson, Banking & Finance partner at Mayer Brown’s office in Singapore and the lead partner on this project. “The financing of Ooredoo goes a long way in helping in the development of not only Myanmar’s telecommunications sector, but also the country’s economy, and we’re proud to be able to contribute towards achieving that.”

Mayer Brown is one of the few international law firms with direct experience in Myanmar. The firm advised on the Ahlone 121MW combined cycle independent power producer (IPP) project, the first IPP project in Myanmar. The firm is also currently advising the international lending group on the Myingyan 225MW gas-fired power project, Myanmar’s first internationally tendered power project and one of the most anticipated infrastructure projects in the country to date.
