With a background in industrial engineering, it’s no surprise that Mayer Brown’s Brian Netter enjoys working “to unravel intricate problems.” A partner in the firm’s U.S. Supreme Court and appellate practice, Netter has put his problem-solving skills to work at all levels of the court system, including successfully representing the D.C. Council in its battle to gain budget autonomy. He played lead roles in the Supreme Court briefings of Polar Tankers Inc. v. City of Valdez, Alaska, involving the Constitution’s little-known Tonnage Clause, and Republic of Philippines v. Pimentel, a sovereign-immunity question, and successfully opposed review of a death sentence that he previously got overturned. —Marcia Coyle
