Mayer Brown announced that Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner Timothy S. Bishop (Chicago) has been named to The National Law Journal’s (NLJ) inaugural list of “Energy & Environmental Trailblazers,” which recognizes the achievements of 50 of the “great minds impacting the crucial intersection of energy production and the environment” and “seeking to balance [the] often conflicting priorities” of conservation and energy generation. Mr. Bishop has substantial experience in environmental and land use litigation under the Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act, Clean Air Act, federal and state takings clauses, and nuisance law. Of his five environmental/land use arguments before the US Supreme Court and many more in appeals courts, he told the NLJ, “I am proudest of three wins in Clean Water Act cases I argued before the Supreme Court—[such as the decision that] precipitation runoff from forest roads does not require Clean Water Act permits.”
Activists favor “huge permitting schemes” to curtail business use of natural resources, which draw the EPA’s resources from other environmental work with greater impact, Mr. Bishop said. “I will continue to take great pleasure in beating in court the Luddite-minded green groups that attack good stewards of the environment.”
Mr. Bishop’s environmental law work has also been recognized by Chambers USA, which has consistently ranked him as a top-band practitioner in this area. In addition to environmental litigation, he represents clients in a broad range of business disputes on appeal and in dispositive dismissal, summary judgment and class certification motions in federal and state courts. A co-author of the leading treatise Supreme Court Practice (10th ed. 2013) and a contributor to Federal Appellate Practice (2d ed. 2013), Mr. Bishop is a prolific author and speaker on appellate practice, environmental law and securities law.
