Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced that Corporate & Securities partner Jeff M. Dobbs (Houston), Banking & Finance partner Thomas L. Eldert (Washington DC), Intellectual Property partner Brian A. Rosenthal (Washington DC) and Real Estate partner David B. H. Saye (Charlotte), were named 2014 “Rising Stars” by Law360. This annual recognition honors attorneys under the age of 40 “whose accomplishments in major transactions or litigation belie their age,” the publication said.
Jeff M. Dobbs — Mr. Dobbs was recognized as a Rising Star in the Energy category (view article) for “playing the lead role in negotiating the terms of major deals” throughout his career.
Law360 highlighted Mr. Dobbs’ role in advising Sinochem Petroleum USA LLC, a US subsidiary of the Beijing-based Sinochem Group, on a $1.7 billion transaction to purchase a 40% undivided interest in approximately 207,000 net oil and natural gas leasehold acres held by Pioneer Natural Resources Company in the highly prospective horizontal Wolfcamp shale play within the Spraberry Trend of the Midland Basin in west Texas. The publication also referenced Mr. Dobbs’ representation of Regency Energy Partners on its joint venture in 2011 that acquired a natural gas liquids storage, fractionation and transportation business from Louis Dreyfus Highbridge Energy LLC — later renamed Castleton Commodities International LLC — for nearly $2 billion.
Mr. Dobbs noted the tough competition of being a young attorney in the energy sector, and told Law360, “you have to promote yourself through hard work, starting out young and hungry, and have the capacity to be responsive to rigorous client demands.”
Thomas L. Eldert —Mr. Eldert was named a Rising Star in the Project Finance category (view article) for his “major role in the changing legal and business infrastructure in Iraq over the past decade,” and for his work on project finance matters in a host of other countries, including Afghanistan, Turkey, Tunisia and Georgia, as well as on blockbuster energy financing deals in the US.
Among Mr. Eldert’s various representations, Law360 noted his work on behalf of the US government agency Overseas Private Investment Corp. in a $50 million financing for the development of a hotel in Baghdad’s international zone, which was the first international project financing of its type in Iraq. Mr. Eldert told Law360 that while working in a “completely novel legal environment” presents challenges, it’s also “rewarding to be such an integral part of the sweeping changes in the country's legal landscape.”
Brian A. Rosenthal — Mr. Rosenthal was chosen in the Intellectual Property category (view article) for his work litigating more than 65 complex and high-stakes patent cases for high-tech and life sciences clients. Law360 noted that his “zeal for understanding and explaining complicated technologies has served him well” as he secured an “impressive series of victories” and developed a “particularly deep expertise.”
Law360 highlighted Mr. Rosenthal’s 2013 successes, including securing summary judgment motions for Philips in its five-year running highly complex patent case against Masimo Corp, which involves 28 patents, complicated theories of lost profits and antitrust allegation, and a $700 million damages claim. The publication also noted his involvement in the firm’s precedent-setting victory for Google in a patent infringement suit brought by BuySAFE Inc.—one of the first cases in which a patent was invalidated in light of the US Supreme Court’s Bilski decision on business method patents. Additionally, Law360 referenced Mr. Rosenthal’s representation of Google and Motorola in two of 20 parallel patent lawsuits filed by BE Technology LLC.
Mr. Rosenthal, who is a computer programmer by background, told Law360 that he finds it enjoyable as well as challenging to “learn new technologies... so well that you can explain them to anyone better than the people who are really immersed in the technology.”
David B. H. Saye —Mr. Saye was recognized in the Real Estate category (view article) for his “impressive track record” advising major financial clients and others in an assortment of real estate transactions and deals, from financing to development.
Mr. Saye told Law360 that his professional success is largely due to his service-oriented approach. “You have to provide outstanding client service and you have to beat out the other attorneys by being there whenever you're needed,” he said.
Law360 received more than 1,000 submissions for the “Rising Stars” series this year. Winners were chosen based on the strength of their accomplishments in their practice areas.
