Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced that John Mancini, a partner in the firm’s New York office and a co-leader of the firm’s global Intellectual Property practice, has been named a 2013 “MVP” by Law360. This recognition honors attorneys who have displayed “exemplary work on critical litigation, mammoth deals and first-of-their-kind global matters.”
As an MVP in the Intellectual Property category, Mr. Mancini was selected for defending heavy-hitting clients in high-stakes cases that led to landmark decisions and continue to shape intellectual property law.
Law360 profiled Mr. Mancini’s major legal wins within the past 12 months, including his victory on behalf of Google in its patent infringement suit with buySAFE Inc., which was one of the first cases to invalidate a patent on Bilski grounds after the Federal Circuit’s recent landmark decision in CLS Bank.
Law360 also highlighted Mr. Mancini’s win before the US International Trade Commission (ITC) on behalf of Pernod Ricard USA in a patent infringement suit brought by a patent troll, Lamina Packaging Innovations LLC, which was the first-ever ITC case to employ an accelerated-review order under the ITC’s new pilot program.
Commenting on the importance of IP law as a way to foster innovation, Mr. Mancini said, “Our country distances itself from the rest of the world because of the new inventions we make, and it would be a tragedy if the law were used to impede the advancement of new technology. I have taken it upon myself to fight those attempts, and to be creative about it each time, to foster the growth of new technology ... because it's important to our economy.”
