London - At a conference hosted by Mayer Brown today, eminent speakers from the European Parliament, Cisco, Novartis and the Oxford Internet Institute review the current state of privacy regulation in Europe, the USA and Asia in light of the recently agreed EU Data Protection Regulation and the fault lines emerging between privacy regimes in different regimes around the world.

Baroness Sarah Ludford, MEP, and co-negotiator for the European Liberal Group on the EU Data Protection Regulation, says: “Privacy is becoming both more important and more difficult to deliver as methods of data collection and processing continue to develop, and the challenge for policy-makers is to ensure that privacy laws adapt to technological change. My goal is to ensure that the new EU Data Protection Regulation can do this by guaranteeing substantive rights for citizens whilst ensuring that reasonable business can proceed and the digital economy can thrive without an unwarranted administrative load.”

Richard French, Director of Legal Services at Cisco says: “Privacy anxiety amongst online users varies but there's no doubting our insatiable appetite for the Internet. 90% of the world's data was created in the last 2 years, over the next 2 years half the world's population will be Internet users and there may be as many as 20 billion connected devices. Given the world's growing dependence on this technology, its citizens are entitled to ask those whose job it is to protect them for more innovative, joined-up solutions, not a trade-off in trade talks.”

Mark Prinsley, Head of Intellectual Property at Mayer Brown, says: “This is a particularly important moment for businesses which use personal data to take stock of the implications of the recently revised EU Data Protection Regulation.”
