London - The London office of global law firm Mayer Brown announced today that it has been awarded the internationally recognised ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system.

ISO 14001 is the most widely used framework for environmental management in the world. It requires companies to establish an environment policy, determine environmental impacts, and implement, and continually improve their environmental management system through measurable targets and management reviews.

Mayer Brown’s offices at 201 Bishopsgate already have an "excellent" BREEAM rating and the London Office recently reaffirmed its commitment to reducing its impact on the environment in its new Sustainability Policy Statement. Mayer Brown has set targets for continuous improvement in four key areas in order to reduce carbon emissions, waste, energy consumption and raise awareness on the environment impacts of the business through internal engagement programmes.

“Mayer Brown has made great strides in improving the firm’s sustainability performance and certification to ISO 14001 gives the London office increased credibility when talking to clients and other stakeholders about the excellent work that goes on to manage and minimise environmental impacts,” commented Andrew Nicholson, Director of Sustainability and Responsibility at EDP, which provides sustainability advice.

Sean Connolly, London senior partner at Mayer Brown, said: “Achieving ISO 14001 certification is a significant next step in the development of our environmental strategy. Having recognised the impact that our business has on the environment we are committed to using the standard to develop more sustainable working practices. We also recognise the value of the standard to our clients who use it for benchmarking purposes amongst their service providers.”

Michael Hutchinson, partner and chair of the London Green Committee at Mayer Brown, said: “This is a great achievement as the standard gives us the best platform from which to improve in all our impact areas. I would also like to thank everyone across the firm for their ongoing support of our efforts to effect positive, sustainable changes across our business.”
