Thomas M. Durkin, a Chicago-based partner in the Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice of Mayer Brown, has been confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate as a US District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois. He will be sworn in on January 14, 2013.

Judge-Designate Durkin was nominated by President Barack Obama in May 2012 after being recommended by Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk of Illinois.

“Thomas Durkin will be an excellent District Court judge…(his) outstanding legal experience and proven community leadership will serve the Northern District of Illinois well,” said Senator Kirk. Added Senator Durbin, “Throughout his career, Tom Durkin has demonstrated strong leadership in his community and a solid commitment to public service. The non-partisan American Bar Association awarded Mr. Durkin its highest rating of ‘unanimously well-qualified.’ I couldn’t agree more.”

At the Northern District, Judge-Designate Durkin will join four other jurists who are former partners at Mayer Brown, including District Judges Robert Dow Jr., Gary Feinerman and John Tharp and Magistrate Judge Sheila Finnegan. Judge-Designate Durkin and Judges Dow, Tharp and Finnegan spent their entire careers in private practice at Mayer Brown.

“Tom is an exceptional litigator with all the attributes needed to be a truly great jurist, including keen intellect, sound judgment and unimpeachable character,” said Mayer Brown Chairman Paul Theiss. “While Tom will be greatly missed by all of us at Mayer Brown and by the clients he has served so well and faithfully, we all will benefit greatly from the wise choice made by President Obama, Senators Durbin and Kirk and the Senate.”

Mr. Durkin has tried more than 55 federal and state jury trials to verdict. Much of his trial work has focused on business litigation, along with class action, product liability and medical device defense and patent litigation. In addition, he has handled a wide variety of white collar criminal matters, especially in the fraud, tax and public corruption areas. In related compliance counseling, he has conducted internal investigations of corporate clients involving various fraud allegations and compliance with the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, and he has used this experience to provide review and counseling related to corporate compliance programs.

Before joining Mayer Brown, Mr. Durkin served as Assistant US Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois from 1980 to 1993. During that time, he held positions as First Assistant US Attorney, Chief of the Special Prosecutions Division, Chief of the Criminal Receiving & Appellate Division, and Deputy Chief of the Special Prosecutions Division. He received the Excellence in Law Enforcement Award from the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce in 1993 and the Attorney General's John Marshall Award from Attorney General Richard Thornburgh in 1991.

Mr. Durkin received a JD degree with honors from DePaul University College of Law and a BS degree with honors from the University of Illinois. He served as law clerk to The Honorable Stanley J. Roszkowski, US District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, from 1979 to 1980 and is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers.
