1 March 2010 – Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that Paul J. Astolfi has joined the firm’s Chicago office as a partner in the Global Projects practice. Previously, he was a partner at Kirkland & Ellis in Chicago.
Mr. Astolfi specializes in renewable energy project development and finance, with an emphasis on wind and solar energy. Among other engagements, he represented the developer in the $270 million leveraged sale-leaseback of Acciona Energy’s Nevada Solar One, the largest solar thermal electric generating facility built in the US in the last 18 years.
Mr. Astolfi’s work in the renewable energy field also includes counseling a leading private equity fund regarding its investment in and financing of a top-tier US renewable energy project development company, including aspects of project finance, wind turbine finance and acquisition finance. Another area in which Mr. Astolfi has extensive experience is counseling clients in restructuring their financing arrangements.
“Renewable energy, specifically wind and solar, is a strong growth area offering tremendous opportunities for both investors and developers,” said partner Barry Machlin, co-leader of Mayer Brown’s Global Projects practice. “Paul offers our clients extensive experience in this area and will be a real asset for the firm.”
“Mayer Brown’s strength in project finance and renewable energy and the firm’s geographic reach provide an ideal platform for expanding my practice,” Mr. Astolfi said. “I look forward to working with the team and contributing to the continued growth of our practice around the globe.”
Prior to joining his former firm, he served as acting general counsel for Acciona Energy North America Corporation, where he directed the activities of outside counsel and participated in company management activities.
Mr. Astolfi received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Massachusetts and a J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School.
