25 November 2009 – Leading international law firm Mayer Brown has advised City & Guilds on a joint venture with the Manipal Group of India to provide vocational and standardised education services in India.
City & Guilds, the UK’s leading awarding organisation and global leader in work-related qualifications, has teamed up with the Manipal group, one of India’s largest education providers, to launch IndiaSkills, which aims to set up 500 learning centres for one million learners over the next five years.
City & Guilds currently provides qualifications for 1.6 million learners in 81 countries every year. With their portfolio of over 500 qualifications in more than 28 industry sectors, they will provide the curriculum for the content of the IndiaSkills courses, focusing initially on retail, hospitality, banking and English language training. Manipal will provide support on the ground to deliver the work-based training schemes, while leveraging its existing links with major employers in India to help ensure newly qualified students obtain employment.
Paul de Bernier, corporate partner at Mayer Brown, said: “We have a strong India practice firmwide, having worked on a range of India M&A, funds, capital markets and real estate transactions, and this transaction evidences our ability to serve our clients' cross-border and cross-practice needs, especially with key markets like India."
David Miller, Head of Legal at City & Guilds said: “Mayer Brown provided a high standard of support to us at all levels of their team and across the entire process, from the production and negotiation of the transaction documentation, through to the regulatory hurdles we faced in India. An important aspect of this was their management of the relationships with lawyers and advisors in different jurisdictions.”
The Mayer Brown team was led by corporate partner Paul de Bernier with IP partner Ian Wood and associates Laura Rodger, Linda Lee, Leah Brand and Annemarie Payne.
