1 September 2009 – Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that George K. Miller has joined the New York office as a partner in the Global Projects and Infrastructure Groups. Mr. Miller joins Mayer Brown from another major international law firm where he had concentrated in international and domestic finance and leasing, in particular in the infrastructure, transportation and energy sectors.
Mr. Miller has worked on numerous “Deals of the Year” and other high-profile transactions in the projects and infrastructure space. Earlier this year, he represented the senior bank lenders in the financing of the $1.6 billion concession over Interstate 595 in Broward County, Florida. Other financing work involved airports in Chile, the Dominican Republic and Jamaica; toll roads and railroads in Brazil, Chile, China and Mexico; power, transmission, pipeline and telecommunications projects in Argentina, Chile, China, India, Indonesia and the United States, and related work for numerous Latin American energy companies; and resort developments in the Dominican Republic, Dubai, Mexico and the United States.
In addition, Mr. Miller has represented U.S. and non-U.S. parties in domestic and cross-border leasing and other financings of aircraft, rolling stock, containers and other equipment and facilities, including structured financings in the capital markets.
“This is a tremendous acquisition for the New York office, reflecting the firm's commitment to grow in New York,” said partner Richard A. Spehr, partner in charge of Mayer Brown’s New York office. “George exemplifies that kind of lateral partner that will immediately plug into our global platform, leveraging the linkage between our New York, Chicago, London, Hong Kong, and Brazilian offices. We are thrilled to welcome George."
Since the start of the year, Mayer Brown’s New York office has added nine lateral partners in practice areas such as intellectual property, litigation – white collar defense & compliance and insurance – and insurance & reinsurance. For the Global Projects group, this is its third lateral hire in 2009.
“George brings to Mayer Brown a proven track record of success in international projects,” said partner Barry N. Machlin, who is co-head of Mayer Brown’s Global Projects group and a member of the firmwide partnership board. “Having been on the opposite side of the table as him on numerous projects, I know he will be a tremendous asset to the firm. George is widely respected for his practice.”
“Mayer Brown has done outstanding work in both the domestic and international projects and infrastructure arenas,” Mr. Miller said. “I look forward to being part of Mayer Brown’s strong global platform and bringing my international projects experience to help grow this practice.”
While at his previous firm, Mr. Miller headed the project finance practice in the firm’s Asian offices from 1991 to 1998. Since 1998, he has been based in New York and represents clients primarily in the U.S. and Latin America.
Mr. Miller has written and spoken extensively on project finance, leasing and syndicated lending topics for legal and other trade publications and bar associations. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Committee on Publications of the New York State Bar Association. He has been identified as a leading practitioner by Chambers and Partners, the International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers and The Best Lawyers in America.
Mr. Miller received his undergraduate degree from Yale College in 1975 and his J.D. from Harvard Law School and an M.P.A. from the John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1979.
