4 June 2009 – Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that the 2009 edition of Legal 500 United States ranks the firm’s practices in 24 categories, including top-tier rankings in five categories:

  • Finance: Structured Finance – Securitization;
  • Litigation: Supreme Court and Appellate;
  • Media, Technology & Telecoms: Technology – Outsourcing;
  • Tax: Domestic Tax – Central; and
  • Tax: Tax Controversy.

For securitization work, “Mayer Brown remains one of the leading players in this practice area,” Legal 500 says. “The team has grown and evolved with the market and has a strong track record for developing securitized product lines…  The ‘leading-edge, intellectual’ group is capable of handling the most complex instruction. Mayer Brown’s international reach has been building for several years and a Brazil presence has been added to the existing network; in addition, the firm has also increased its capability throughout Asia.”

“Mayer Brown’s Supreme Court and Appellate group is strategically committed to shaping the law at state circuit level in a way that serves its clients and percolates up to Supreme Court level,” Legal 500 says.  The attorneys “are considered by clients to be the ‘best at what they do - high-quality appeals’…  Clients instruct Mayer Brown due to the ‘stellar reputations’ of its oral advocates and the practice’s overall ‘reputation for high-quality work and integrity.’  The practice prepares ‘excellent appellate briefs,’ with a ‘100% grasp of the legal issues and implications.’

Mayer Brown’s Outsourcing practice earned the only top ranking awarded by Legal 500 in its category. “‘Unquestionably of the highest quality’ and ‘simply working on another level to everyone else,’” the publication says. “The firm has built a group that continues to be at the forefront of the most dynamic areas in outsourcing… The international scope of the group and the familiarity of its attorneys with increasing roles in handling big deals in the most active jurisdictions makes it and them ‘definite first-choice’ for many clients.”

Mayer Brown’s Chicago Tax practice is a “standout Midwest tax practice. As well as broad expertise in transactions, tax-planning and other advisory work, Mayer Brown’s regional tax niches include financing, bio-tech, pharma and life science corporate transactions, insurance and reinsurance,” according to Legal 500.
Legal 500 states the Tax Controversy practice is “one of the few firms with the capacity and lawyers with the gravitas to litigate several complex cases simultaneously and this alone is high recommendation. However, it is where disputes with the IRS have entered the shadowland hiatus between tax audit and court that the Mayer Brown negotiating skills and the eye for compromise are paramount. Clients consistently praise the ‘determined and inventive’ tax attorneys who ‘negotiate hard to strike realistic and acceptable deals’.

The publication also lists 16 Mayer Brown partners as “Leading Lawyers” in their practice categories, including:
