International law firm Mayer Brown is pleased to announce that Christopher Holmes joined the firm's Pensions group on 3 December 2007 as a Professional Development Lawyer ("PDL").
Chris joined Mayer Brown in London from Ashurst where he worked as a Solicitor and PDL with particular focus on corporate, commercial, litigation and sports law matters. He read Social and Political Sciences at King's College, Cambridge and then completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Law.
Chris began work the for Royal Mail on its Olympic Marketing and Sponsorship team in 1995 and has continued to work for the Olympics, recently advising on employment issues and acting as Ambassador for the London 2012 bid. He also has 12 years experience as a freelance journalist and 20 years of public speaking experience at corporate, public sector, community and sporting events.
As well as being a dedicated PDL, referred to as "impressive, clear, direct and authoritative" he is also committed to his non-legal community work representing various different boards. He is currently a member of the Board at UK Sport, an independent public body established by Royal Charter in 1997 to lead sport in the UK to world class success. He was also a member of the Board of the Disability Rights Commission, an independent public body set up by the Government in 2000 to enforce rights and promote equality of opportunity for disabled people, until 30 September 2007. Chris is also Sporting Patron for the "Youth Sport Trust."
Chris's interest in sport comes from a highly successful career as a sportsman himself. He is Britain's most successful Paralympic swimmer, having won nine Gold medals and holding seven World Records (one of which remains current). He won Sports Personality of the Year (Variety Club of Great Britain) in 1997.
Sean Connolly, London Senior Partner, Mayer Brown, commented: "We are delighted that Chris has decided to join Mayer Brown. Not only will he be a tremendous asset to the Pensions team as a highly regarded PDL, but the additional experience that he has gained from his work on many social and charitable boards will help Mayer Brown to build on its commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility."
Annette Sheridan, Director of Human Resources at Mayer Brown in London, added: "Chris's background is impressive and he will add significant depth to both our legal and non-legal work. It is our ongoing desire to recruit high profile individuals from a variety of backgrounds and with different interests, recognising that such experience and understanding brings valuable diversity to the firm."
Chris Holmes commented: "I look forward to joining the firm, working with the highly regarded Pensions team in London and getting involved with the firm and working with the established committee to help shape the CSR agenda."
