Geoffrey Chan, a Partner at Johnson Stokes & Master, together with two senior executives from Alliance Construction Materials Limited recently collaborated in a paper on the quarrying industry in Hong Kong. The paper has won the Caernarfon Award 2007 by The Institute of Quarrying ("IOQ").

The paper, titled "The Evolution of the Quarrying Industry in Hong Kong", studies the evolution of the legal aspects of the Government's control and regulation of the operation of quarries in Hong Kong from the 1960s to 2000, as well as the environmental aspects of such operations throughout the period. It also addresses issues regarding rehabilitation and the creation of new land suitable for new development or public use as the overall life cycle of a quarry.

The other two co-authors from Alliance Construction Materials Limited are David Hogan, Chief Executive Officer, and David Pallot, General Manager.

Geoffrey Chan said, "We are very excited to have won this award, which reflects our specialty in construction and quarrying. Alliance Construction Materials Limited is a long-standing client of JSM. We are indeed very pleased to share the honour with them on this project."

The IOQ is an international professional body for quarrying, construction materials and the related extractive and processing industries, with 6,000 members in some 50 countries of the world.

The Caernarfon Award is presented annually for the best paper given at an Institute conference, seminar or meeting which is judged to have contributed the most to the advancement of some aspect of the industry. The award was decided after careful examination and an exhaustive review process.

JSM will receive the award at the Institute of Quarrying in the U.K.
