20 June 2007 - Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw is a co-recipient of the National Legal Aid & Defender Association's 2007 Beacon of Justice Award. The award honors the firm's work on behalf of Guantanamo detainees.

In a letter to the firm, NLADA President and CEO Jo-Ann Wallace wrote: "As we acknowledge the critical role that pro bono efforts play in cementing America's foundation of justice, it would be our privilege to have the opportunity this year to recognize Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP's commitment to ensuring access to justice as we honor the law firms who have provided representation to Guantanamo Bay detainees."

At the dinner Sara Lee Corporation General Counsel Roderick A. Palmore, who was the recipient of the 2007 Corporate Exemplar Award, praised those firms that are representing Guantanamo detainees. The award was presented by Esther Lardent, president and chief executive officer of the Pro Bono Institute, at the NLADA 2007 Annual Exemplar Awards Dinner, held Tuesday, June 12, in Washington, DC. Ms. Lardent noted that "[t]hese lawyers - the Guantanamo counsel --- are the best of our profession. They deserve our gratitude and our esteem."

Gary Isaac accepted the award on behalf of the firm.
