Overview

Indonesia is one of the world’s leading emerging market economies, and Mayer Brown has advised on many transactions that have contributed to the country’s success story.

With a history of representing both domestic and international clients on Indonesian matters, Mayer Brown knows how to bring transactions to successful completion in the region. Our services include advising clients on a full range of transactions—including M&A capital markets projects and project finance, tax and tax structuring, international trade, construction and restructuring—as well as helping to resolve disputes.

International Trade

For over a decade now, Mayer Brown lawyers have assisted Indonesian manufacturers/exporters, as well as the Government of Indonesia, in international trade matters involving the United States, the European Union and the World Trade Organization. This experience has given us great insight into Indonesian business practices, allowing us to effectively represent Indonesian interests. Representative matters include:

  • Successfully representing the Government of Indonesia in the landmark US – Clove Cigarettes proceedings (DS406) where Indonesia won key claims before the panel and the Appellate Body. This case was selected as the "Global Dispute of the Year: International Litigation" in the inaugural American Lawyer 2013 Global Legal Awards.
  • Defending the entire Indonesian shrimp industry, as well as the Indonesian government, against U.S. claims of illegal subsidization. We successfully convinced the U.S. government that no subsidization occurred, which resulted in the case being dismissed.
  • Representing one of Indonesia’s largest cut paper manufacturers, against claims that it was dumping photocopy paper into the U.S. market. That same case involved allegations of illegal subsidization, and thus in addition to representing the company accused of dumping, we also represented that company, as well as the Indonesian government, against those subsidization claims.
  • Acting for the Indonesia’s largest biodiesel producer before the EU General Court we have succeeded in a challenge to the EU’s regulations imposing countervailing measures on imports of biodiesel that were lifted as a result.

As a result of our client base and contacts in the Indonesian government, our international trade lawyers travel to Indonesia on a regular basis. When needed, lawyers in our Singapore office are available to assist, as well.
