Mayer Brown land use partner Edgar Khalatian named to Daily Journal’s 2014 “Top Development Lawyers” list

14 August 2014

Edgar Khalatian, a partner in the Government & Global Trade group in Mayer Brown’s Los Angeles office, has been selected as one of California’s 2014 “Top Development Lawyers” by the Daily Journal, a leading California legal publication.

The publication highlighted Mr. Khalatian’s work representing the property owner and developer of the highly-publicized SOLA Village mixed-use project in downtown Los Angeles that will include approximately 1,500 residential units, 200 hotel rooms, and a significant commercial and office component. Mr. Khalatian described the project to the Daily Journal as “transformative,” as this area of Los Angeles has not had significant developments in decades.

The Daily Journal also noted his appointment by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and Michael LoGrande, director of the city’s planning department, to serve as a co-chair of the Los Angeles Zoning Advisory Committee (ZAC). As the sole lawyer on the committee, Mr. Khalatian is working with the planning department, city leaders, and community organizations to revise the city’s outdated zoning code. He told Daily Journal that the new five-year plan would “set standards for Los Angeles for decades to come.”

At Mayer Brown, Mr. Khalatian primarily represents investors and developers in all aspects of real estate transactions, focusing on land use entitlement matters and California Environmental Quality Act compliance.

As an active member of the Los Angeles legal community, in addition to his role on the ZAC, Mr. Khalatian currently serves on the board of directors for the Valley Industry & Commerce Association (VICA) and is chairman of VICA’s land use committee. He is also on the executive committee of the Central City Association of Los Angeles.

Mr. Khalatian is a licensed real estate broker and a registered lobbyist in the cities of Los Angeles and West Hollywood.
