After much anticipation, the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has issued the first significant rule implementing the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) since the FDCPA was enacted more than 40 years ago. The rule clarifies how the pre-internet era FDCPA regulates debt collectors in the age of cell phones, email and social media.
