Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, is proud to announce that it received a perfect score in the 2014 Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation’s annual Corporate Equality Index (CEI) and earned the “Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality” distinction. The CEI serves as a tool to rate American businesses on their treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) employees and their families as well as their demonstration of corporate commitment to LGBT equality.
“Mayer Brown strives to be a leader in the legal community on diversity issues and we take great pride in this top score,” said Mayer Brown Chairman Paul Theiss. “Diversity and inclusion have always been an important component of our firm’s foundation and are critically important in providing clients with the high level of service they have come to expect from Mayer Brown.”
The 2014 Corporate Equality Index rated a total of 934 businesses in various industries, including 145 law firms. According to the HRC Foundation, the CEI rates law firms on 40 specific policies and practices. To achieve a perfect score and the coveted distinction of “Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality,” firms must have fully inclusive equal employment opportunity policies, provide equal employment benefits, demonstrate organizational LGBT competency, evidence their commitment to equality publicly and exercise responsible citizenship. Mayer Brown’s efforts in ensuring LGBT equality in each of the survey’s main criteria earned it the prestigious 100 percent ranking.
“Mayer Brown is committed to the values of inclusion and equality and continues to implement policies and initiatives that ensure the firm’s lawyers and staff are provided with opportunities to succeed at all levels,” said Jeremiah DeBerry, Mayer Brown’s Director of Diversity & Inclusion.
Mayer Brown’s Committee on Diversity & Inclusion is involved in several LGBT rights initiatives. The firm serves as a national sponsor of the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, a leading legal services organization seeking to establish and protect LGBT civil rights. Additionally, each year the firm sponsors several LGBT community organizations.
The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the educational arm of the nation’s largest civil rights organization dedicated to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality.
