Amendment to California’s Sick Leave Law: The Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014

29 July 2015
Mayer Brown Legal Update
On July 14, California Governor Jerry Brown signed an emergency amendment to the state’s complex new sick leave law, clarifying and modifying a number of the requirements of that law, which had just taken effect on July 1, 2015. The new sick leave law requires employers to provide paid sick leave to all employees who work in California for the same employer for 30 or more days. Exempt and nonexempt employees are covered, unless their employment is governed by a collective bargaining agreement or falls within one of a few narrow exceptions. The emergency amendment went into effect immediately upon Governor Brown’s signature on July 14, as an urgency statute.
