LGBT Initiatives

Mayer Brown is committed to providing a thriving and supportive workplace for LGBT lawyers and staff. We have provisions for same gender relationships in our benefits programs. We provide pro bono legal service for a number of LGBT-focused organizations as well as support for their organizational events. The Committee on Diversity and Inclusion includes LGBT partners who monitor and push for progress in this important area.

Highlights and achievements regarding LGBT rights initiatives at Mayer Brown include:

  • Mayer Brown earned a perfect 100 rating for the eighth consecutive year and was designated as a “Best Place to Work for LGBT Equality” in the 2018 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), sponsored by The Human Rights Campaign Foundation. The CEI surveys major businesses to benchmark important employer benefits and protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender employees and their families.
  • We participate annually in the Lavender Law Career Fair in order to increase the number of LGBT law student applicants for our summer associate program.
  • We are a national sponsor of the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund, a leading legal services organization seeking to establish and protect LGBT civil rights.
  • Each year we sponsor several LGBT community organizations.
  • Mayer Brown was recognized in 2017 by Equality Illinois as a top Illinois law firm for LGBT inclusiveness and equality for the sixth consecutive year.

  • We are a member of Stonewall’s Diversity Champions programme, Britain’s leading best-practice employers' forum for sexual orientation and gender identity equality, diversity and inclusion. The programme helps us create inclusive and accepting environments for all our employees.
  • We are a sponsor of Diversity Role Models, a charitable organization that actively seeks to prevent homophobic and transphobic bullying in UK schools.
  • We are a corporate sponsor of The Lord Mayor's Appeal Power of Diversity Breakfast Seminar series and hosted in London "The Design of Affinity Network Groups Who's Listening?" breakfast. London insurance partner Angus Duncan and member of the London office's LGBT Network participated in a discussion on the value of affinity networks to both employees and business.

  • We work with Hong Kong Gay and Lesbian Attorney Network ("HKGALA"), the first organization dedicated to promoting LGBT diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, to increase awareness of LGBT legal issues in Hong Kong and abroad, encourage LGBT-focused pro bono work, partner with public and private institutions to effect change at both social and legal levels, and ensure that, within the legal sector, LGBT individuals can bring their authentic selves to work.
