President-elect Donald J. Trump has expressed admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin, and the two reportedly had a warm exchange about the future relationship of the two countries soon after the US election outcome was announced. As a result, many have speculated that a Trump administration may relax the US sanctions against Russia that were imposed in response to Russia’s actions in Ukraine and its annexation of Crimea. In recent days, this speculation has intensified in the wake of Mr. Trump’s choice for secretary of state and statements by his incoming White House chief of staff suggesting that lifting the sanctions is a real possibility. This Legal Update discusses the possible changes in Russia sanctions that might occur under President Trump.
