The EU General Data Protection Regulation - Implications for Asian Businesses

Mayer Brown was delighted to host a seminar on “The EU General Data Protection Regulation - Implications for Asian Businesses”. Oliver Yaros, Partner of Mayer Brown, based in our London office, will be in town to join Gabriela Kennedy, Partner and Head of Asia IP & TMT Group to discuss and explore how businesses in Asia should prepare to meet the obligations introduced by the GDPR.

Whether based outside or inside the European Union, organisations that process personal data about individuals located in the EU must prepare to comply with the GDPR—a tougher and more complicated regulatory framework. Replacing the 1995 Data Protection Directive, the GDPR tightens restrictions on the collection and use of personal data and permits European data protection authorities to impose fines of up to the greater of four percent of an organisation’s annual global revenue or €20,000,000 for each infringement. Starting 25 May 2018, Asian based organisations that process personal data in the context of their European businesses, offer goods or services to individuals in the EU, or track the behaviour of individuals located in EU must comply with the new law.

Speakers presented on:

  • The requirements that have to be complied with under the GDPR
  • What companies can expect—immediately and down the road—following GDPR implementation
  • How Asian businesses should prepare to meet the obligations introduced by the GDPR and avoid the substantially tougher sanctions under this new law
