The Belt and Road Initiative: Realizing the "China Dream"

7 June 2017
Mayer Brown Book

Jointly written by Mayer Brown JSM and Jingtian & Gongcheng, this brochure consists of ten articles, providing a detailed description of the business environments in India, Kazakhstan, Myanmar, Pakistan, Poland and Turkey. It analyzes the rebuilding of trade routes across the Eurasian continent by the Belt and Road, and offers useful insights into the Initiative based on practice and experience. It covers key issues such as business culture, labor relations, environment, taxation, construction, finance and dispute resolution, and offers targeted guidance.

One thing for readers to note is that this brochure also covers what you will not find in local laws and policies. For example, in Polish business culture, building connections through trust and familiarity is of critical importance. Another example is not making the mistake of sending a junior employee to attend a meeting with the CEO of an enterprise in Kazakhstan. Gaining this type of insight requires significant in-depth local practical experience.

These experiences and other useful guidance have been accumulated by lawyers of our two law firms following years of acting on successful projects in many of the countries along the Belt and Road. The project list attached to this brochure is representative of these past success stories, and highlights some major deals Mayer Brown JSM advised on. Mayer Brown JSM has advised extensively on project finance deals in Asia. Countries include much of Southeast Asia (Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Brunei etc.), India and Pakistan, as well as some Central Asian countries such as Kazakhstan. In Europe, Mayer Brown also has strong experience in infrastructure projects.

We hope that this brochure will assist Chinese enterprises seeking investment or other opportunities on the Belt and Road.
