Mayer Brown partner Joseph Seliga selected as member of inaugural class of Presidential Leadership Scholars

13 February 2015

Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that Global Infrastructure and Government partner Joseph Seliga (Chicago) has been selected as a member of the inaugural class of the Presidential Leadership Scholars, a unique leadership development initiative that draws upon the resources of the US presidential centers of Lyndon B. Johnson, George H.W. Bush, William J. Clinton and George W. Bush. These presidential centers have partnered to bring together a select group of leaders who have the desire and capacity to take their leadership strengths to a higher level in order to help their communities and our country.

Sixty scholars from a variety of sectors— private, public, non-profit, military and academia— were invited to participate in this year’s cohort, which will begin a six-month executive-education series in late February at Mount Vernon, George Washington’s home. Over the course of the non-degree program, the scholars will travel to each participating presidential center to learn varying approaches to leadership from former presidents, key administration officials and leading academics.

The program entails approximately 100 hours of informative sessions and case studies. The curriculum studies leadership moments from each administration, drawing from presidential center archives and other resources. It offers insights on how each president addressed pressing challenges and benefits from the participation of President George W. Bush and President William J. Clinton. It also provides in-depth analyses of how leaders across all sectors address similar types of challenges.

The scholars will put into practice the leadership principles they’ve studied, develop a network of peers and exchange ideas with the mentors and others who can help them make an impact in their communities.

At Mayer Brown, Mr. Seliga advises on complex infrastructure transactions. He represents clients on path-breaking public-private partnership transactions in the road, bridge, airport, port, public parking, mass transit and convention center sectors. He has worked on many “Deal of the Year” award-winning transactions, serving in different transactions as either government entity counsel, sponsor’s counsel or lenders’ counsel.

In addition to his transactional work, Mr. Seliga represents clients in various state and local government matters, particularly in the area of government ethics and political law. He acted as counsel to the Chicago 2011 Transition Committee, the Chicago 2011 Inaugural Committee and the Illinois Inaugural Committee 2011 and is currently serving on the Illinois Campaign Finance Reform Task Force.
