Mayer Brown named to National Law Journal’s “Appellate Hot List” for seventh consecutive year

24 November 2014

Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced that its Supreme Court & Appellate practice has been named one of the best in the country by The National Law Journal for the seventh consecutive year.

In its prestigious 2014 Appellate Hot List, The National Law Journal recognized Mayer Brown’s impressive record in appellate advocacy. The Appellate Hot List recognizes 20 firms with outstanding achievements before the US Supreme Court, federal circuit courts and “state courts of last resort.” Mayer Brown has been selected to the list in each year it has been published.

In its overview of Mayer Brown’s accomplishments in 2013-2014, the publication emphasized two among Mayer Brown’s many appellate successes in 2014:

  • In a case the publication said “changed national lobbying policy,” special counsel Charles Rothfeld and associate Joey Minta (both DC) argued in the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit that a federal court’s ruling that six registered lobbyists could not serve on International Trade Advisory Committees infringed on their First Amendment right to petition the government. After the court sent the case back to the lower court, the Obama administration revised the policy that was behind the ban.
  • In a win for the retailer Target, after hearing arguments from partner Don Falk (Palo Alto), the California Supreme Court ruled that California law does not require businesses to make defibrillators available to patrons.

To select firms for the 2014 Appellate Hot List, The National Law Journal asked its readers to nominate firms with at least one significant win since January 2013 and with an outstanding track record. To make the final selections, the editors reviewed the publication’s reporting on the nominated firms.

Mayer Brown’s Supreme Court & Appellate lawyers have argued more than 220 cases before the Supreme Court and hundreds more in federal and state appellate courts across the nation.
