Mayer Brown partners Matthew Ingber and Stephen Shapiro named “2016 Litigation Trailblazers” by The National Law Journal

8 December 2016
Mayer Brown announced today that Litigation & Dispute Resolution partners Matthew Ingber (New York) and Stephen Shapiro (Chicago) were named “2016 Litigation Trailblazers” by The National Law Journal (NLJ). The list recognizes 50 people who have “helped make a difference in the fight for justice”—individuals who show “a deep passion and perseverance in pursuit of their mission, having achieved remarkable successes along the way” and who are “advocating strongly for their causes.”

Throughout his career, Mr. Ingber, who has wanted to be a litigator since junior high school, has been a generalist with a focus on financial services. NLJ highlighted his work advising BNY Mellon as securitization trustee on the largest global residential mortgage-backed securities (RMBS) settlement in history at $8.5B. “We filed a proceeding under Article 77 of the Civil Practice Law & Rules in New York,” he said in NLJ. “That proceeding lasted several years; there was a nine-week trial and then an appeal. Ultimately the appeals court found for the trustee across the board.” As a result, a number of other trustees have used Article 77 as the procedural mechanism for approval of global RMBS settlements. NLJ recognized Mr. Shapiro, founder of Mayer Brown’s Supreme Court & Appellate Litigation practice group, for recruiting numerous lawyers to the firm, including current and former lawyers from the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), law professors and US Supreme Court clerks. “As of today, Mayer Brown’s team boasts seven alumni of the SG’s office,” he told the publication. “As a result, Mayer Brown has created an impressive track record of consistency in the Supreme Court.” Mr. Shapiro has argued 30 cases before the Supreme Court, and, including their time in the OSG, Mayer Brown’s current team of appellate lawyers has argued more than 230 cases.
