Mayer Brown partner Richard Campbell named a “Divorce, Trusts & Estates Trailblazer” by The National Law Journal

31 March 2016
Mayer Brown announced that Wealth Management partner Richard Campbell (Chicago) has been named to The National Law Journal’s (NLJ) 2016 list of “Divorce, Trusts & Estates Trailblazers.” The list recognizes agents of change who have made “significant marks on the practice, policy and technological advancements of divorce, trusts and estates.”

The NLJ noted Mr. Campbell’s novel approach to a unique dispute arising from the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370. A married couple aboard the plane had left behind two young children. To allow the children access to their parents’ assets, Mr. Campbell successfully proved the couple was truly missing and deceased to overcome the convention that people must be missing for seven years to be presumed dead. “The first thing we had to do was prove they were on the plane,” Mr. Campbell told the publication. “The airline originally refused to authenticate a passenger manifest, but eventually did.” The case provides an important roadmap for future similar missing person cases in which a body cannot be found, and where securing live testimony from someone who searched for the missing person is not feasible.
