Mayer Brown named to The National Law Journal’s “Appellate Hot List” for ninth consecutive year

3 January 2017

Mayer Brown announced that its Supreme Court & Appellate practice has been named one of the best in the United States by The National Law Journal (NLJ) for the ninth consecutive year.

In its prestigious 2016 Appellate Hot List, the NLJ recognized Mayer Brown as one of 20 firms representing “some of the most well-known companies in the land” – winning big in state and federal appeals courts across the country. Mayer Brown has been selected to the list in each year it has been published.

In its overview of Mayer Brown’s accomplishments in 2015-2016, the publication emphasized two among Mayer Brown’s many appellate successes in 2016:

  • Mayer Brown lawyers secured a win for Spokeo in a class action decision that NLJ said “has already begun to sweep through lower courts, helping businesses win dismissals of class actions that fail to allege actual harm.” The firm’s team was led by partner Andy Pincus (Washington DC), who has appeared before the High Court justices more than two dozen times.
  • In the only win for a criminal defendant last term, the US Supreme Court agreed with Mayer Brown special counsel Charles Rothfeld, along with partners Paul Hughes and Michael Kimberly (all Washington DC), that police must obtain a warrant to conduct compelled blood tests. According to NLJ, the “blockbuster Fourth Amendment case also established that the government cannot consider a person to have surrendered a constitutional right as part of receiving a driver's license or other state benefit.”

To select firms for the 2016 Appellate Hot List, the NLJ asked its readers to nominate firms with at least one significant win since January 2015 and with an outstanding track record.

Mayer Brown’s Supreme Court & Appellate lawyers have argued more than 230 cases before the Supreme Court and hundreds more in federal and state appellate courts across the nation.
