Mayer Brown lawyers Marc Kadish and Joseph Callaghan receive Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service

26 May 2016
Mayer Brown announced today that Pro Bono Advisor Marc Kadish and Litigation & Dispute Resolution associate Joseph Callaghan received the “Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service” from the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Chicago chapter of the Federal Bar Association as part of the Seventeenth Annual Excellence in Pro Bono and Public Interest Service Awards. The awards honor Chicago-area attorneys for their contributions in helping people most in need of assistance before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Messrs. Kadish and Callaghan were part of a four-lawyer team recognized for defending a Mexican citizen who immigrated to Chicago against a petition for the return of her minor child to Mexico by the child’s non-custodial father. Appointed by District Judge Edmond Chang, Messrs. Kadish and Callaghan handled the expedited litigation from start to finish, including pleadings, written and oral discovery, summary judgment briefing, and a full trial on the merits in the Northern District of Illinois. They also assisted Mayer Brown Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner Michael Kimberly and associate Matt Waring (both Washington DC) in appellate briefing and argument in the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals. In addition, Messrs. Kadish and Callaghan worked with an immigration lawyer and a family law lawyer in obtaining work authorization for the client and filing applications for legal permanent resident status for the client and her minor child.

The recognition marks the third time Mayer Brown lawyers have been recognized by the federal district court and Chicago chapter of the Federal Bar Association. The firm’s lawyers received the Public Interest Award in 2006 and the Pro Bono Service Award in 2000.
