Mayer Brown’s Chicago office hosts Chicago Debate League’s Urban Debate Nationals Qualifier

9 March 2017

For the 10th consecutive year, Mayer Brown hosted the Chicago Debate League’s (CDL) Urban Debate Nationals Qualifier tournament on March 4, where 20 of Chicago’s top high school debaters from public schools around the city competed for the chance to represent Chicago at the National Urban Debate Championships in April.

Seven Mayer Brown volunteers were actively involved in judging the debate rounds, participating in lunch-time roundtable discussions and presenting awards. They interacted with students and provided valuable information by answering questions about working at a global law firm.

“Students who have won this tournament in past years have often experienced tremendous success at the national tournament,” said Jerry DeBerry, the firm’s Director of Diversity & Inclusion. “Year after year, this event has been a fantastic opportunity for Mayer Brown to give back to the community and directly benefit the deserving and inspiring debaters of the Chicago Debate League. We’re happy to support and encourage them in their academic achievement through debate.”

In its 20th year, the mission of the CDL is to advance the academic achievement, life success and community contributions of urban youth by providing them with powerful skills in reading, research, critical thinking, public policy analysis, evidence-based argumentation, respectful advocacy, teamwork and communications, through the mechanism of competitive academic debate. The CDL is administered by a partnership between the Chicago Debate Commission and the Chicago Public Schools.
