Mayer Brown Partners With The Lawfare Project to Host Distinguished Panel of Experts on Lawfare

On May 29, Mayer Brown partnered with The Lawfare Project, a nonprofit organization, to host an event in its New York office. Several notable public figures spoke on the topic of lawfare, which consists of the negative manipulation of national and international human rights laws to achieve purposes other than, or contrary to, those for which they were originally enacted. The Lawfare Project was founded to raise awareness about, and to combat, this pervasive threat.

At the event, Mayer Brown partner Steve Wolowitz provided remarks. The panel included Ambassador John Bolton (Senior Fellow, American Enterprise Institute & Former US Permanent Representative to the United Nations); Cyrus R. Vance, Jr. (District Attorney of New York County); Ambassador Ido Aharoni (Consul General of Israel in New York); Qanta A. A. Ahmed, MD, FACP, FCCP, FAASM (Author of In the Land of Invisible Women); and Brooke Goldstein (Director of The Lawfare Project, Human Rights Attorney, Award-Winning Filmmaker & Author of Lawfare: The War Against Free Speech). The panelists examined lawfare tactics as they are used to silence and punish free speech, delegitimize democratic nations, and impede US national security. Richard Spehr, partner-in-charge of Mayer Brown's New York office, announced that Mayer Brown lawyers will be working closely with The Lawfare Project on a pro bono basis to combat lawfare.
