Mayer Brown JSM receives Companies’ Award from Home Affairs Bureau’s 2016/17 Recognition Scheme for Provision of Pro Bono Legal Services

23 April 2018
Mayer Brown was presented the Companies' Award at the presentation ceremony of the Home Affairs Bureau's 2016/17 Recognition Scheme for Provision of Pro Bono Legal Services ("Recognition Scheme"). This is the first time the firm has received the Award under the scheme, which recognizes the commitment of legal professionals to pro bono legal services in Hong Kong.

The Award commends Mayer Brown's efforts to make pro bono legal services a key part of its company policies, vision and mission. During the recognition period of the Award, Mayer Brown's lawyers completed more than 1,700 hours of invaluable pro bono legal services to various not-for-profit organizations that serve the needs of women, children, elderly and the disadvantaged, among others.

At the ceremony, Mr. Lau Kong-wah, the Secretary for Home Affairs, expressed his gratitude to legal professionals and law firms for their contribution to voluntary service and encouraged more legal professionals to provide free legal services. The Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Legal Advice for Unrepresented Litigants, Mr. Pang Kin-kee, the Chairman of the Legal Aid Services Council, Dr. Eric Li, and Acting Permanent Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr. Patrick Li, were also in attendance to present the awardees their respective individual and/or companies awards.

The Awards, which takes place every two years, recognizes those who have made such contributions, thereby encouraging more legal professionals to volunteer their pro bono services to the public.
