Leading international arbitration lawyer Yu-Jin Tay joins Mayer Brown JSM as a partner in Singapore

2 March 2017
Mayer Brown JSM announced today that Yu-Jin Tay is joining the firm as a Singapore-based partner in its International Arbitration group. Mr. Tay joins with two arbitration associates who focus on international arbitration and was formerly at DLA Piper, where he served as co-chair of that firm’s international arbitration group from 2013 to 2016. Before 2013, Mr. Tay was the Singapore-based head of Shearman & Sterling’s international arbitration practice in Asia.

“Yu-Jin is widely known as a leading international arbitration lawyer of his generation in Asia,” said John Hickin, a co-leader of Mayer Brown’s Litigation & Dispute Resolution practice. “His arrival significantly enhances our arbitration offering in Singapore and in Asia more generally. Singapore is increasingly becoming a major global center for arbitration. With legal and regulatory changes under way, including the SIAC’s new investment arbitration rules and a proposed new legal framework for third-party funding for international arbitration in Singapore, our clients will greatly benefit from Yu-Jin’s counsel.”

Mr. Tay is well-known among leading practitioners on the international arbitration circuit, particularly in Asia. He was one of just a few Asia-based lawyers ranked by Global Arbitration Review’s 45 Under 45 list in 2011. For most of the past decade, he has been consistently ranked as a leading arbitration practitioner in major peer-reviewed directories such as the International Who’s Who of Commercial Arbitration (since 2010), Chambers Asia Pacific (Asia Pacific, Singapore, Korea and Indonesia) and Legal 500 Asia Pacific. With more than 15 years of international arbitration experience as counsel across a wide range of sectors such as manufacturing, technology, energy, oil and gas and natural resources, as well as construction and infrastructure, Mr. Tay has a strong track record acting for clients in general commercial, business combination and M&A-related disputes.

“My team and I are excited to join our friends in Mayer Brown’s International Arbitration group,” said Mr. Tay. “Our clients will quickly appreciate that Mayer Brown’s global arbitration team is culturally diverse, dynamic and results-focused. I am delighted to be joining Mayer Brown.”

In addition to Singapore, Mr. Tay has practiced in London, Paris and Washington DC. He received his LLB and LLM degrees at University College London on a Singapore Public Service Commission scholarship and was trained as a barrister at Fountain Court Chambers in London. He was also formerly a military prosecutor and state counsel with the Singapore Ministry of Defense. He is fluent in Mandarin.

Mr. Tay is the latest partner to join Mayer Brown’s growing global International Arbitration team. In recent years, Mayer Brown has added arbitration partners around the world, including Ted Howes in New York, Alejandro López Ortiz in Paris, Michael P. Lennon Jr. in Houston, and Gustavo Fernandes and Roberto Castro de Figueiredo in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, respectively.

“Yu-Jin’s practice and experience, particularly with Northeast Asian clients, strongly complements our existing capabilities in representing our Asian clients’ interests in disputes throughout the world,” said Terence Tung, the senior partner of Mayer Brown JSM in Hong Kong. “We are very excited to welcome him to our growing practice in Asia and Singapore.”
