Euromoney Legal Media Group Asia Women in Business Law Awards 2016
Mayer Brown JSM partner and co-leader of the firm’s global Intellectual Property practice Gabriela Kennedy won “Best in IP Litigation” and associate Karen H.F. Lee won “Rising Star: IP” at the sixth annual Euromoney Legal Media Group Asia Women in Business Law Awards. According to International Financial Law Review, a Euromoney Legal Media Group publication, the awards celebrate “the advancement of women in the legal profession.” Gabriella won "Best in TMT" three times at the annual awards (2011, 2012 and 2015), while Karen was shortlisted last year for “Rising Star:IP.” Both are based in Hong Kong.

Civic Federation’s Lyman J. Gage Award for Outstanding Civic Contribution by a Chicagoan
Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner Ty Fahner (Chicago) received the Civic Federation’s “Lyman J. Gage Award for Outstanding Civic Contribution by a Chicagoan” at the organization’s annual awards luncheon. Noting Ty’s work in the public and private sectors over his career, the Civic Federation said Ty “has stepped willingly into some of our region’s greatest challenges including pension reform, criminal justice reform and redistricting reform.” Currently Ty is president of the Civic Committee of The Commercial Club of Chicago and serves on the boards of several Chicago-area organizations and on the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad.
Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago (CRFC) Bill of Rights in Action Award
Mayer Brown lawyers received the “Bill of Rights in Action Award” from the Constitutional Rights Foundation Chicago (CRFC) for their work with the American Civil Liberties Union on behalf of same-sex couples in the Wisconsin marriage equality cases. CRFC recognized eight litigators from our Chicago office for their counsel on Wolf v. Walker and Bloechl-Karlsen v. Emory University School of Law’s 2015 Eléonore Raoul Greene Trailblazer Award
Intellectual Property partner Sharon Israel (Houston) received the “Eléonore Raoul Greene Trailblazer Award” at Emory University School of Law’s 2015 alumni awards reception. The Trailblazer award honors an Emory Law alumna who has served as a leader and role model in “an environment not common or traditional for women” and “has blazed a trail for others through her own professional and personal endeavors,” the university said. Sharon, who received her JD and MBA from Emory University in the early 1990s, is being recognized for her “great leadership and achievements in the legal profession,” said Dean of Emory Law Robert A. Schapiro. Sharon is completing a one-year term as president of the American Intellectual Property Law Association.
Global Investigations Review Women in Investigations
Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner Lori Lightfoot (Chicago) is featured in Global Investigations Review’s (GIR) special report, “Women in Investigations 2015.” The inaugural issue profiles 100 women who are “achieving great things” in internal and regulatory investigations—“a notoriously tough area of law”—and who can “serve as inspirations to current and future generations of investigations professionals.” GIR is a news service providing global coverage of government enforcement and regulation.

IP partner Melissa Anyetei (Chicago) received the Illinois Diversity Council’s (ILDC) “Leadership Excellence in Law Award.” The ILDC said that the two honorees in this category “continually develop themselves and others while operating with the highest integrity and ethical behavior,” show “superior leadership” and are “highly regarded in their industries.” The ILDC is a nonprofit organization committed to fostering a learning environment for organizations to grow in their knowledge of diversity.

Society of Construction Law’s Hudson Prize
Litigation & Dispute Resolution partner and London Construction & Engineering group leader Michael Regan (London) has been awarded the Society of Construction Law’s prestigious first place Hudson Prize for 2014 for writing the best essay on a construction law topic. Michael’s paper, “Thorman Revisited,” is a critical reappraisal of the UK Court of Appeal’s decision in Thorman v New Hampshire and an examination of the difficulties in determining the number of claims made for professional indemnity cover in a construction setting. The annual contest is open to entrants from around the world. A panel of lawyers and non-lawyers from a range of backgrounds judge the entries on their originality and contribution to the study or practice of construction law.

Andrew Pincus received the 2014 Research & Policy Award at the US Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform’s (ILR) 15th Annual Legal Reform Summit. The annual Legal Reform Awards honor individuals and organizations whose outstanding work has contributed to reforming America’s civil justice system.
ABA Franchising Group
Lee Abrams was awarded the Lewis G. Rudnick Award from the American Bar Association’s Forum on Franchising for his accomplishments as a franchise lawyer; his contributions to the field of franchise law; his “high standards of professionalism, decency and collegiality”; and his service to the forum. Lee was the forum’s chairman from 1982-1985.

The “Legal Eagles” list identifies lawyers nominated by clients and peers for “superlative” work in franchising. Lee was one of the 154 “Legal Eagles 2013.”

Archis Parasharami was named a 2013 “Rising Star” in the Class Actions category by Law360. The publication noted several class action successes, including Archis’ “key role in shepherding the landmark AT&T Mobility v. Women in Mining UK 100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining
Rachel Speight was named to the UK network of Women in Mining’s (WIM UK) list of “100 Global Inspirational Women in Mining.” The list honors women working in mining and related professions who “support other women in mining, and the communities and environments impacted by the industry” and “demonstrate skills and attributes which can inspire a new generation of professionals in all walks of the mining industry,” the organization said.
Andy Tauber wins writing award
An article co-authored by Washington DC partner Andy Tauber, “How to Argue Medical Device Preemption,” has won the G. Duffield Smith Outstanding Publication Award for the most outstanding article published in a DRI magazine in 2012. The article was published in For the Defense, a monthly publication on civil defense practice. Editors at DRI, an organization of defense attorneys and in-house counsel, selected the winning article based on reader feedback, timeliness of topic, quality of research and writing and freshness of ideas.
