Hong Kong Institute of Highways and Transportation Belt and Road Conference

Geoffrey Chan presented at the Belt and Road Conference titled “Strategies for Protecting Your ‘One Belt One Road’ Investment – How Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) Can Help” on 1 September 2016 in Harbour Grand Hong Kong. The conference was organised by Hong Kong Institute of Highways and Transportation and co-organised by China Highway and Transportation Society and Shanghai Highway & Transportation Society. The conference was a platform for key stakeholders from the civil and infrastructure industry to gain better understanding and find new opportunities on the Belt and Road Initiative. Representatives from the Development Bureau of the HKSAR and Ministry of Commerce of the PRC also attended the conference. During the presentation, Geoffrey discussed the opportunities and risks that investors will encounter in the Belt and Road countries and how international law can help. He gave an brief introduction on the BITs and elaborated on typical provisions and how the treaty can protect investors. Through a series of examples and case studies, Geoffrey illustrated how Hong Kong investors can optimise their protection under a BIT. He concluded the presentation by sharing some practical tips on how to seek the best possible protection against expropriation when investing in Belt and Road countries.
