Mayer Brown lawyer Geoffrey Pipoly honored by NIJC for extraordinary commitment to pro bono

20 June 2018

Mayer Brown announced today that the National Immigrant Justice Center has selected Chicago-based Litigation & Dispute Resolution associate Geoffrey Pipoly as a 2018 “Rising Star” as part of its 19th annual Human Rights Awards in honor of his generosity in providing high quality pro bono services to clients with complex immigration cases. This annual award recognizes individuals who have made outstanding achievements to promote, protect and advance human rights throughout the world.

Mr. Pipoly was recognized specifically for his work successfully securing asylum and release from detention of a 25-year-old Haitian woman in 2017 who fled Haiti to escape severe domestic violence inflicted by her significant other. Local police would not stop the abuse, as there are no domestic violence laws in Haiti. Following a brief stay in Brazil, the client walked to the United States and presented herself at the Arizona border in November 2016, and had been incarcerated ever since.

“It’s not hyperbole to say that we would not have won our asylum case without the constant aid and support of NIJC and the hardworking, passionate people who work there,” Mr. Pipoly said. “I am humbled and inspired by their dedication to those without a voice – but who need a voice the most.”

The NIJC, a Heartland Alliance Program, is dedicated to ensuring human rights protections and access to justice for all immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The organization provides direct legal services to and advocates for these populations through policy reform, impact litigation and public education.
