China Releases Guidelines to Strengthen Cybersecurity Standardisation

December 2016
Computer Law & Security Review

Gabriela Kennedy’s Asia Pacific column in the December issue of Computer Law & Security Review features Mayer Brown JSM article ‘China Releases Guidelines to Strengthen Cybersecurity Standardisation’ by Gabriela Kennedy and Xiaoyan Zhang.

In their China article, Gabriela and Xiaoyan discuss the Several Guidelines to Strengthen National Cybersecurity Standardisation (the “Guidelines”), jointly released by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC), the General Administration of Quality Supervision, the Inspection and Quarantine of China (GAQSIQ), and the Standardisation Administration of China (SAC) on 12 August 2016. Under the Guidelines, mandatory national standards will be introduced to regulate critical fields such as major information technology infrastructure and classified networks. While the release of the Guidelines is consistent with the Chinese government’s intent to have a tighter grip over China’s Internet and networks, it also demonstrates China’s desire to be involved in international cybersecurity standards-setting.

Gabriela is on the editorial board of Computer Law & Security Review and edits the Asia Pacific column, a country by country analysis of the latest legal developments, cases and issues relating to IT, media and telecommunications in the Asia Pacific region.
