Chambers USA 2013 ranks 131 Mayer Brown lawyers and ranks practices in 54 nationwide and state categories

Mayer Brown, a leading global law firm, announced today that the 2013 edition of Chambers USA: America’s Leading Lawyers for Business ranked 131 of its lawyers, with 154 total rankings, in 72 nationwide and/or state practice categories. Of these, 29 are top-band or higher rankings in 28 nationwide and/or state categories.

The new Chambers USA edition also ranked Mayer Brown practices in 54 national and/or state practice categories, including 10 top-band rankings in these categories.

Mayer Brown’s 54 national and/or state practice category rankings in the new edition of Chambers USA include: 

  • 23 nationwide rankings, six of which are top-band: Appellate Law; Capital Markets: Securitization; Outsourcing; Projects: PPP; Tax: Controversy; and Transportation: Road (Carriage/Commercial).
  • 31 state rankings in Illinois, New York, North Carolina, Texas and Washington DC, four of which are top-band:
    • Illinois – Antitrust; Communications; Technology & Outsourcing; and
    • Washington, DC – Technology & Outsourcing.

The 2013 edition of Chambers USA also included rankings in the nationwide practice categories for “Recommended for Client Service” and “Recommended for Commercial Awareness.” The rankings highlight a handful of firms (typically six-ten) who demonstrate excellence in the respective areas, and Mayer Brown scored well in both categories: 

  • Recommended for Client Service – Appellate Law; Government: Government Contracts; Outsourcing; Real Estate; Tax: Corporate & Finance; and Wealth Management.
  • Recommended for Commercial Awareness – Appellate Law; Capital Markets: Securitization; Product Liability & Mass Torts; and Wealth Management.

Chambers’ comments on Mayer Brown’s nationwide top-band rankings: 

Appellate Law – According to Chambers, “Mayer Brown remains at the forefront of the appellate field, engaging in many high-stakes appeals at the Supreme Court level” and “its impressive client roster spans a diverse range of industries, demonstrating the team's breadth of knowledge.” Chambers sources say that the group is “a team of superstars who consistently deliver insightful counsel and, when it’s go time, superior advocacy and results."

Capital Markets: Securitization – Chambers says Mayer Brown “is highly respected for its balanced and comprehensive advice on transactions incorporating a range of asset types and structures.” A source quoted by Chambers says, “They know the business extremely well.”

Outsourcing – Of the firm’s top-band ranking, Chambers says, “Mayer Brown maintains its enviable national standing in the outsourcing arena” and references the firm’s “array of expertise in the fields of ITO and BPO that includes guiding clients through the development, renegotiation and termination of strategic sourcing transactions.” Sources quoted by the publication say that the team is “very efficient, capable and knowledgeable with an excellent customer approach.”

Projects: PPP – “Mayer Brown is highly respected in the PPP market, and receives particular praise for its expertise in government representations and infrastructure transactions,” says Chambers. In addition, the publication reported that the group “is particularly strong in assisting with solar and wind energy projects on behalf of major developers, owners and lenders.” Chambers sources say the team “is very professional, responsive and extremely knowledgeable in project finance.”

Tax: Controversy – According to Chambers, “Mayer Brown's preeminent practice group undertakes all manner of tax controversy work, including transfer pricing, audits and local, state and international controversy matters” and has “extensive trial and appellate experience.” In addition, the publication reports that “the firm’s global scope and its strong working knowledge of international tax matters are especially lauded by market sources.”

Transportation: Road (Carriage/Commercial) – Chambers says Mayer Brown “is recognized for its government relations, regulatory and safety work for road transportation clients” and that the firm “routinely advises automotive manufacturers, trade associations and other industry bodies on all aspects of litigation and administrative law in the transportation sector.” According to Chambers sources, Mayer Brown is “a key firm in safety matters.”
