How We Support You

Our Support Functions

The only way we can consistently deliver to our clients is to have a team of talented and motivated staff who contribute both on an individual and team basis. We recognise and value the importance of our people because we understand that our success depends on them. Our people comprise a cohesive group of professionals in all disciplines and at all levels who collaborate to provide seamless service to our clients.

We have a comprehensive array of support departments with one purpose - to assist staff in realising personal and professional growth and ensuring that they can provide service excellence. Our support departments include Human Resources, Training, Professional Support, Library, Business Development and Marketing, Information Technology and Finance.

A Comprehensive Training & Development Programme - "Turning What You Know into What You Do"

Mayer Brown recognises that in a rapidly changing world, you will be called upon to enhance and adapt what you do and how you do it. We also know that there is more to training and professional development than "meets the eye". We provide a comprehensive training & development programme for all staff - a programme that commences from the day you join us, "tracks" your career and supports your professional and personal growth until the day you leave us.

Our performance standards provide for all staff the benchmark for the skills that we believe will best assist you in the work you do. They have also provided the foundation for our training & development programme. Generally, training will be offered to our staff in three areas : technical skills, practice management and development, and know-how (including IT and the use of the Library). The courses offered under each of these areas will assist in "filling in the gaps" and preparing you for career advancement. They also seek to exploit your strengths so that you assume the role of "teacher" as well as "student". The programmes are mostly offered in-house and make use of our many internal support specialists. All materials produced from all of our courses are made available to the entire firm through the Mayer Brown Intranet.

For lawyers holding a Hong Kong Practicing Certificate and, who are subject to the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Scheme of the Law Society of Hong Kong, our courses will assist them in meeting the Scheme requirements. Mayer Brown is an Accredited Provider under the Scheme. Our courses are not passive in that they anticipate changes in legal education and practice so our lawyers possess the necessary skills well ahead of market demand - we train our lawyers to be proactive and anticipate (not just meet) the demands and expectations of our clients.

From time to time, training courses will also be delivered by external specialists. We recognise that not all of the skills you may need can be provided internally and hence, we make use of the very best external providers for you through these courses.

For all courses we adopt strict quality control measures - if the course does not meet our high expectations, we want no part of it.

In addition to the internal and external programmes, we invite guest presenters to Mayer Brown from time to time. These presenters keep us in touch with market and industry trends, and provide new and different approaches to current issues. At Mayer Brown, we believe differences in opinion and diversity are what makes it possible for us to grow, they help us to understand the many layers and complexities inherent in legal problems.

At Mayer Brown, we believe that training and development goes hand in hand with the delivery of high quality work and excellent service. We are committed to investing in you because, quite simply, we believe it is an investment in the future Mayer Brown.

A Sophisticated Knowledge Management Centre

In an increasingly competitive legal market, we believe that our knowledge is our competitive weapon. Our success increasingly rests upon our technical knowhow, problem solving expertise and innovative abilities and being able to find, combine and apply the best skills available to address clients' needs. We are investing heavily in ensuring that our lawyers have the most up to date information at their fingertips and that they are quickly able to call on the collective experience of Mayer Brown when dealing with client matters. We have one of the largest legal knowledge management teams in Hong Kong.

Our lawyers benefit from a sophisticated Knowledge Centre and Library staffed by a team of experienced professional support lawyers, librarians and information specialists who are dedicated to supporting the information needs of our lawyers. All of our lawyers have access to Mayer Brown's Intranet which houses our collection of standard form, precedent and knowhow libraries. Our lawyers do not have to spend time searching for routine information or "reinventing the wheel" but instead are able to concentrate on the key issues of a client's problem allowing them to efficiently deliver new and innovative solutions.

We also believe in sharing our knowledge with clients and, using the latest technology, we launched an on-line legal update service for clients and contacts of Mayer Brown in 2001 - this was the first comprehensive service of this type for Hong Kong, PRC, Thailand and Vietnam law.

We recognise the increasing importance of technology in the delivery of legal services and continue to invest in and exploit the latest technology. We have developed extranet and virtual deal room capabilities in-house which allow us to collaborate with our clients and other professionals on-line 24 hours a day, seven days a week from anywhere in the world where there is internet access. Our investment in sophisticated case management systems means that we can do the work in the most efficient and cost effective way we can.

A Fully-Equipped Library

Our Library has resources which are unrivalled in Hong Kong. It has a collection of over 20,000 hard copy volumes covering England, Hong Kong and other jurisdictions. It also has approximately 190 law reports and legal journals which reflect the versatility of Mayer Brown's legal services. The Library On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) provides desktop access to all library materials via our internal computer system. The Library subscribes to a variety of electronic databases and electronic versions of major legal research tools e.g. CD-ROMs and online services which, in turn, make available effective and efficient search facilities for legislation, case law, news and journal articles in various jurisdictions and on various subject topics.

Our six library staff (including staff with professional librarianship qualifications) also run an Enquiry Desk to answer enquiries and provide guidance for use of the Library resources and facilities. Library staff also conduct library orientation tours, training courses and workshops on the Library's resources and facilities.

In conjunction with the Professional Support Department, the Library provides current awareness updates to assist our lawyers in keeping up to date in changes and developments in the law, government policies and industry changes, in different jurisdictions. Also, in conjunction with the Knowledge Centre, the Library maintains and updates aspects of the "Knowledge Centre" section of the Mayer Brown Intranet.
