Amici Curiae: Friends of the Court or Nuisances?

Federal and state appellate courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, have long accepted briefs of amici curiae, "friends of the court," as helpful-and sometimes indispensable-submissions that aid the courts greatly in crafting their opinions.
