This panel will address recent changes to the Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act of 1980 (FIRPTA), including an expanded exemption for publicly traded REIT stock, a new exemption for REIT stock owned by qualified shareholders; and a free pass from FIRPTA altogether for certain foreign pension funds. The panel will focus on planning under the new rules, as well as a few quirks and traps for the unwary.
