Daniel W. Luther, a partner in Mayer Brown LLP’s Chicago office, recently acted as General Counsel of the Indianapolis Colts professional football team, representing the franchise in all facets of risk management and legal operations.  Mr. Luther is also an Advisor to the National Football League’s Committee on Estate Planning, which plays an important role in setting the League’s ownership policies.  On behalf of the Colts, Mr. Luther negotiated the first stadium lease modification in professional sports involving a direct cash payment to the franchise; designed the Colts’ standard contract for sponsorships; advised the Colts on the sale of naming rights to its training facility; handled contracts for television and radio broadcasts; negotiated the sale and purchase of aircraft and air charter agreements; assisted the Colts in the creation of a Political Action Committee, the first established by a professional sports franchise; advised the Colts regarding intellectual property protection; provided tax advice to the team and its owner; and advised the team in the post 9/11 period regarding legal aspects of tightened security at its stadium.  Mr. Luther also advises the Colts from time to time regarding important internal League matters.  Mr. Luther practices in the areas of estate planning, estate administration, and estate and trust litigation, and has provided estate planning advice to owners of professional sports franchises and to high net worth professional athletes.  Mr. Luther received his AB magna cum laude from Georgetown University and his JD magna cum laude from Georgetown University’s School of Law.
