Experience
Dr. Markus Geisler is a well-regarded regulatory and corporate lawyer whose practice focuses particularly on issues of environmental and planning law, privatizations and project finance, transportation law, and international product liability. He represents both domestic and international clients operating in numerous industry sectors, as well as energy and utilities companies, banking groups, government agencies, and private investment consortia.
Prior to joining Mayer Brown in 2002, Markus was associated with two other law firms in Germany. He has published widely and is an active presenter at professional seminars and symposia. Markus is fluent in German (native speaker) and English.
Notable Engagements
Environmental and Planning Law: - Advised clients from various industry sectors in classical environmental matters.
- Advised national and multinational clients on licensing issues for industrial facilities.
- Advised investors on their potential future liabilities and risk allocation for clean-up of contaminated sites.
- Advised on major plant and infrastructure projects which involved complex and inter-related planning and environment issues.
Privatizations and Project Finance: - Advised different consortia on all four airport privatizations (Düsseldorf, Hanover, Berlin, Hamburg) in Germany to date.
- Represented clients in privatizations of water treatment facilities in Germany.
- Advised a multinational water company on the privatization of the supply of water and wastewater services of the Municipality of Sofia.
Transportation Law: - Advised an association of air carriers on the intended establishment of a new airport system in Germany.
- Advised numerous clients on aviation law matters including ground handling, night operation, slot allocation, airport fees and noise issues.
Environmental and Planning Law: - Advised different investors on various airport projects (most notably, advised DHL with respect to the relocation of its central European cargo sorting terminal (hub) from Brussels to Leipzig/Halle airport).
- Represented German railway authorities in court proceedings concerning planning decisions for new railways, including the new high-speed train track between Cologne and Frankfurt.
Privatizations and Project Finance: - Advised a consortium of German banks on the project financed privatization of the Chilean seaport of Valparaíso.
- Advised a leading UK power company on the financing of a power plant constructed and operated by a project company in Germany.
