In a letter dated January 30, 2008, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley thanked David Gossett and the Mayer Brown team that worked with him for their assistance in the District of Columbia handgun ordinance case, District of Columbia v. Heller, No. 07-290, currently pending in the Supreme Court. We filed an amicus brief in Heller on behalf of the City and the Chicago Board of Education, arguing that the District's gun ban was constitutional and that, even if it were not, the Second Amendment does not apply to state or local governments and thus that the City of Chicago's handgun ban is constitutional.
Mayor Daley noted that Mayer Brown's "work on the amicus brief on behalf of our city and the Chicago Board of Education helped advance critical arguments that will one day make Chicago, and all our cities, better and safer places to live."
Joining David on the Hellerteam were Andy Frey, Samuel Bray, and Ranjit Hakim.
