Matthieu de Varax is a partner in the Paris office of Mayer Brown's finance practice. He focuses his practice on the aviation industry, with over 20 years experience assisting airlines, lessors and financial institutions in the negotiation and documentation of leasing and financing arrangements for commercial aircraft. He regularly assists aviation clients on other areas of the industry such as airframe and engine maintenance agreements, the regulatory aspects of air transport, liability claims and aircraft repossession.
Matthieu has developed an active business jet practice, acting for manufacturers, buyers, lessors and financial institutions on the financing, leasing and trading of business jet aircraft across a great number of jurisdictions. He is a member of the Finance and Leasing Focus Group of the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA).
Matthieu also represents arranging banks, investment funds and sponsors in other areas of structured finance such as asset based lending, project finance and public-private partnerships. Having assisted the successful bidder on the first public-private partnership contract ever awarded by the French ministry of defense (project known as Helidax), he focuses his PPP practice on the defense and security sectors and regularly represents sponsors and lenders on the largest outsourcing transactions in these sectors.
