26 July 2005 - Fred W. Hartman has joined Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP where he will focus on federal tax matters. Mr. Hartman will be working out of the firm's Charlotte office.

Previously Mr. Hartman was with PricewaterhouseCoopers National Tax Services in Washington where he advised large, multi-national companies on federal and international tax issues.

"I chose to join Mayer Brown because the firm has both a premier tax practice and world class government practice," said Mr. Hartman. "The firm offers a depth and breadth of services available only from a global firm."

"Fred will be a tremendous asset to Mayer Brown's Charlotte Office and its tax practice," said Frank Blanchfield, senior partner in the Charlotte Office's tax group.

Mr. Hartman has served as Tax Counsel to the US Senate Committee on Small Business since April 2003. Mr. Hartman advised Senator Olympia Snowe in her role as Chair of the Senate Small Business Committee and as a Member of the Senate Finance Committee on federal tax legislation, including the Jobs and Growth Tax Act of 2003 and the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004. He also assisted Senator Snowe in drafting federal tax legislation on issues such as small business expensing, timing of income recognition, corporate and individual AMT, "Sub-chapter S" reform, employee benefits, completed-contract method of accounting, new market tax credit, unrelated business taxable income, and the responsible person penalty.

"We are very pleased that Fred has chosen to join Mayer Brown," said Robert Glennon, who heads the firm's tax legislative practice. "Fred has had a key role in counseling and drafting important tax legislation affecting business and will be a valuable member of our team."

Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP is among the 10 largest law practices in the world with more than 1,300 lawyers practicing in seven US cities and six European cities.
